Right rate, right season

Seeding rates differ by species because seed sizes differ enormously — fine bluegrass needs a third the weight of chunky fescue. Cool-season grasses establish best in early fall; spring seeding fights weeds and summer heat.

More seed isn't better

Doubling the rate crowds seedlings into weak, disease-prone turf. Success comes from contact and moisture: rake seed lightly into soil, keep the top inch damp for two to three weeks, and hold off mowing until three inches tall.
