Fraction Calculator

Add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions with simplified results.

Quick answer

To add or subtract fractions, put them over a common denominator, combine the numerators, then simplify. To multiply, multiply across the numerators and denominators; to divide, multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction. Always reduce to lowest terms.

How fraction arithmetic works

To add or subtract, rewrite both fractions over a common denominator, then combine the numerators: 1/2 + 3/4 = 2/4 + 3/4 = 5/4. To multiply, multiply straight across: numerator × numerator over denominator × denominator. To divide, flip the second fraction and multiply — dividing by 3/4 is the same as multiplying by 4/3.

Simplifying

A fraction is simplified by dividing top and bottom by their greatest common divisor. The calculator always reduces the result and, when it's top-heavy, also shows the mixed-number form (5/4 = 1 ¼) and its decimal value.
