Normalizing every course
The differential adjusts a score for course difficulty: (score − rating) × 113 ÷ slope. Rating measures scratch difficulty; slope measures how much harder the course plays for bogey golfers (113 is neutral). A 92 on a hard course can beat an 89 on an easy one.
From rounds to index
The World Handicap System averages your best 8 differentials of the last 20 rounds — rewarding potential, not average play. Course handicap then rescales the index to each course's slope, which is why your strokes vary from track to track.
