An EV's 'MPG' is miles per kWh — 3–4 for most models. At 15¢/kWh a 75 kWh battery fills for about $12 and drives ~260 miles, a third the fuel cost of a 30 MPG gas car. Overnight time-of-use rates widen the gap further.
Where charging costs flip
Public DC fast charging at 40–60¢/kWh can approach gas prices — road trips erase much of the savings. The economics live at home: drivers who charge overnight capture the full advantage, which is why the home charger effectively pays for itself.
