Watts to dollars

Cost = watts ÷ 1000 × hours × rate per kWh. A 1,200 W space heater running 3 hours daily at 17¢/kWh costs about 61¢ a day — $18 a month. Heat-producing appliances (heaters, dryers, ovens) dominate most bills; electronics are usually noise.

Finding the real numbers

Nameplate watts are maximums — a fridge cycles, a laptop idles low. A $15 plug-in meter reads true consumption, and your utility bill states your actual rate (U.S. average ≈ 17¢/kWh in 2025, but 30¢+ in California and New England, where efficiency pays double).
