Prisms, and thirds of prisms

Any prism or cylinder is base area × height. Pointed solids — cones and pyramids — hold exactly one third of their enclosing prism, and a sphere is 4/3 π r³. Those few rules cover tanks, pools, boxes, and planters.

Volume to capacity

Cubic centimeters ÷ 1000 gives liters; cubic inches ÷ 231 gives US gallons; a cubic foot holds about 7.48 gallons. Compute in one length unit throughout, then convert once at the end.
