Scientific Notation Calculator
Convert numbers to and from scientific notation and compute with them.
Scientific notation

E-notation

Plain
45,600,000
Order of magnitude
10^7
One digit, then a power
Scientific notation writes every number as a mantissa between 1 and 10 times a power of ten: 45,600,000 = 4.56 × 10⁷. The exponent counts how far the decimal moved — positive for large numbers, negative for small ones like 3.2 × 10⁻⁵.
Why scientists insist on it
It makes magnitude comparisons instant (10²³ vs 10²⁶ is a thousandfold at a glance), makes precision explicit through significant figures, and survives numbers no display could write out — Avogadro's 6.022 × 10²³ has 24 digits in plain form.
