MMXXVI
Additive with subtractive pairs
Symbols add left to right, except when a smaller precedes a larger: IV is 4, IX is 9, XC is 90, CM is 900. Only those six subtractive pairs are canonical — 1994 is MCMXCIV, never MDCCCCLXXXXIIII.
No zero, no fractions, still everywhere
Romans had no numeral for zero and computed on abacuses, using numerals only to record results. The system caps naturally at 3,999 without overbars — and survives on clock faces, monarchs, Super Bowls, and movie credits.
