Weighted Average Calculator

Average values with different weights, like grades or portfolios.

Quick answer

The mean (average) is the sum of the values divided by how many there are. The median is the middle value when sorted, and the mode is the most frequent. The median resists distortion when a few extreme values would skew the mean.

When every value isn't equal

A weighted average multiplies each value by its importance before averaging: exam scores by their syllabus weight, portfolio returns by position size, review stars by vote counts. With weights 30/45/25, the middle score dominates the result.

Weights as percentages or not

Weights needn't sum to 100 — the formula divides by their total, so 30/45/25 and 6/9/5 give identical results. What matters is their ratio. A plain mean is just the special case where every weight equals one.
