Shape matters, not just size
Fat stored around the abdomen (apple shape) is metabolically more harmful than fat at the hips (pear shape). WHO flags elevated risk above a 0.90 ratio for men and 0.85 for women — thresholds that predict cardiovascular disease independently of BMI.
Any unit works
It's a pure ratio, so centimeters or inches both work — just measure both sites the same way: waist at the narrowest point (or navel), hips at the widest part of the buttocks, tape level, standing relaxed.
