Why MAP weights diastole

Mean arterial pressure approximates the average pressure driving blood into organs. The heart spends about twice as long in diastole as systole, hence MAP = (systolic + 2×diastolic) ÷ 3. Clinicians target MAP ≥ 65 mmHg to keep organs perfused.

Reading your numbers

Current U.S. categories: normal under 120/80; hypertension begins at 130/80. Measure seated, rested, cuff at heart level, and average several readings across days — a single office reading runs high for many people (white-coat effect).
