Income measures flow; net worth measures accumulation — assets minus liabilities. It's the figure that moves when you save, invest, or pay down debt, and it's best tracked quarterly: single months are noisy, trends are the signal.
Benchmarks, loosely
One common yardstick suggests net worth ≈ age × pretax income ÷ 10. More useful than any benchmark: separate liquid net worth (excluding home equity) since you can't spend a house — and watch that the debt-to-asset ratio falls over time.
