How lease payments split
You pay for the value the car loses (cap cost minus residual, spread over the term) plus finance charges on the money tied up — computed with the money factor, which is just APR ÷ 2400. A high residual is the cheapest lease lever there is.
Negotiate the right numbers
Dealers quote payments; negotiate the cap cost like a purchase price, ask for the money factor and multiply by 2400 to see the real APR, and be wary of large down payments — that money is gone if the car is totaled.
