The 25× rule
FIRE math inverts the 4% withdrawal guideline: a portfolio of 25 times annual spending has historically sustained inflation-adjusted withdrawals for 30+ years. Spending is squared into the equation — cutting $500/month both shrinks the target by $150,000 and frees $500 to invest.
Use real returns
Because the target is defined in today's spending, project with inflation-adjusted returns (5% real ≈ 8% nominal). Time-to-FI depends overwhelmingly on savings rate: at 50% of income saved, independence arrives in roughly 17 years from zero regardless of salary.
