How CDs work
A certificate of deposit locks your money for a fixed term in exchange for a guaranteed rate, typically higher than savings accounts. APY already includes compounding, so maturity value is simply deposit × (1 + APY)^years. FDIC insurance covers up to $250,000 per depositor per bank.
Ladders beat lump sums
Splitting a deposit across staggered terms (a CD ladder — 6, 12, 18, 24 months) keeps part of your money coming due regularly, so you're never fully locked in and can roll into higher rates as they appear. Early withdrawal usually forfeits several months of interest.
